Teacher Open House & Workshop, Saturday, February 27, 2016, 10 a.m. Staff from local museums invite you to see what we have to offer! Enjoy workshops, learn about education programs, brush up on tips for primary source and object-based learning, and participate in hands-on demos. Tours and refreshments provided. Registration required by Tuesday, February 23. FREE for teachers with school ID & students in education learning programs.
Plummers' Kitchen, Sunday, February 28, 2016, 12 noon - 3:30 pm Using the open hearth in the dependency kitchen, the Riversdale Kitchen Guild cooks up foods typical of the Plummer family and other 19th-century African-American residents of Riversdale. Fee includes a tour of the house. $5 adult; $4/senior; $2/student; FREE children 4 & under. All ages welcome.

Tasting the Past: A Taste of Maryland, Saturday, March 5, 2016, 2:30 pm. Foodways historian Joyce White shares the history of Maryland's most iconic food traditions and businesses. Afterward, treat your tastebuds to an assortment of local dishes. Advance payment required by February 26. Resident: $18; Non-Resident: $22
Riversdale Chamber Music Society Concert, Sunday, March 6, 2016, 2:30-3:30 pm. The wind ensemble District 5 performs Gounod's Petite Symphony. After the performance, enjoy a reception with the artists. FREE. All ages welcome.
Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day Live: Women's History Month, Saturday, March 12, 2016, 12 noon-2 pm. From Rosalie Calvert to female servants, enslaved and free, to Senator Hattie Caraway, many women called Riversdale home. Riversdale is joining museums across the country to highlight the lives of these women. For a FREE tour, print the required ticket from this website. FREE. All Ages Welcome.
Kitchen Guild Open House, Sunday, March 13, 2016, 3:30 pm Curious about joining our Kitchen Guild? Step into the warmth of the open hearth kitchen and chat with members while sampling an array of seasonal soups from period recipes. Registration required by March 10. FREE. Ages 16 & up.
An Afternoon of Austen Film & Fashion, Saturday, March 19, 2016, 1 pm Jane Austen's novel Emma celebrates its 200th birthday this year. Enjoy an illustrated costume lecture and light refreshments, followed by a viewing of a film adaptation of the novel. Patrons may view the film only at no charge, but reservations are still required. Advance payment required by March 11. Resident: $18; Non-Resident: $22.

"Some of the Finest Paintings Ever in America" Exhibit, Fridays & Sundays, April 8 - October 23, 2016, 12:15-3:15 pm. In the spring of 1816, members of Washington society mingled with artists and collectors. They flocked to Riversdale to see the first blockbuster art exhibit in this country, the Stier-Peeters collection of fine European paintings. In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of this historic showing, Riversdale will be exhibiting 16 high-quality reproductions throughout the museum. House tour is included with admission. Stay tuned for more information on special art-themed events during the exhibit! $5 adult; $4 senior; $2 student; FREE children 4 & under. All ages welcome.
Riversdale Chamber Music Society Concert, Sunday, April 24, 2016, 2:30-3:30 pm. The Society presents "5x5": Five Musicians-Five Filmmakers-Five Minutes. Five filmmakers working independently share their reflections of Sergei Prokofiev's 1924 Quintet for Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, and Bass. After the show, mingle with musicians and enjoy refreshments. FREE. All ages welcome.
Hands-on History: Political Animals, Tuesday, April 26, 2016, 10 am Spend Election Day off from school diving into the history of the political "zoo" - from elephants to donkeys to moose and more! Participants will enjoy crafts, cooking, and games. Advance payment required by April 19. Resident: $18; Non-Resident $22. Ages 8-12.
Tavern Night, Saturday, April 30, 2016, 8 pm. Join us as we transform Riversdale into a 19th-century tavern! Guests will enjoy spirited entertainment by the Ship's Company sailors and dine on tavern-style dishes. Fee includes a souvenir glass. Advance payment required by April 25. Jazz on the Lawn: Lord Baltimore Country Club , Wednesday, June 22, 2016, 7 pm. Kick off our Jazz on the Lawn series with a tribute to the Lord Baltimore Country Club, housed at Riversdale in 1914. Dress in your best bib and tucker and bring out the seersucker! Spread out an elegant picnic and enjoy lawn games before the Potomac Winds concert. Prizes will be awarded! FREE. All ages welcome.

Hands-on History Weeks: Exhibit Explorers
Monday-Friday, July 11-15, Monday-Friday, July 18-22
The art exhibit comes to life with activities, games, crafts, and more. Participants take on the role of artist's apprentices, explore the museum's paintings, and mount an exhibit. Shakespeare in the Parks: Twelfth NightWednesday, July 13, 7:30 p.m. "If music be the food of love, play on," opens one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies. Battle of Bladensburg Encampment Saturday, August 13, 12 noon. The encampment returns with a bang this year as British and American troops ready the rockets and prepare for battle. Step back into 1814 with an afternoon of hands-on demos, children's activities, tours, music, and more! Food available for purchase. Scouts, call for details about earning a badge. Grandparents' Day, Sunday, September 11, 12:15 - 3:15 p.m. The Calvert children's grandparents lived far away in Europe. Spend some time with your grandparents with a FREE tour and family activity on their special day. Note: Limited to one free tour per paid admission.
The Riversdale Chamber Music Society, Sunday, September 18, 2:30 p.m. As a tribute to the current exhibition, the Society's wind quintet performs Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." Mingle with the musicians during a post-concert reception. FREE

Out of the Attic Appraisal Fair, Saturday, October 1, 9 a.m. - noon. Bring up to 4 items for evaluation by Weschler's, appraisers & auctioneers of Washington, DC. You may substitute photos for large items. Weschler's does not appraise antiquities, books, foreign coins, stamps, or toys. This program benefits the Riversdale Historical Society. 9-10 am slots open to Members only. Reservations required by September 23. Fee: $15 per item; $10 for RHS members.
Costume Ball, Saturday, October 8, 6 p.m. Dress the part of your favorite portrait for a lively evening of Regency-style dance and light refreshments. Black tie also welcome Advance payment required by October 1. Fee: Resident* $25; Non-Resident $32.50
Harvest Festival, Sunday, October 16, noon. Enjoy some fall family fun with hands-on activites in the garden and open hearth kitchen. Shuck your own popcorn, make mulling spices for cider, listen to stories, and more! Activities offered while supplies last. Fee: $5 adult; $2 student (includes tour of historic house)

Homeschool Day: Full S.T.E.A.M. Fest, November 6 and 10, 10 a.m. In partnership with Maryland S.T.E.A.M Fest, homeschoolers are invited to learn about arts and sciences 19th century-style with hands-on activities throughout the house. FREE, but advance registration is required by October 28.
The Riversdale Chamber Music Society, Sunday, November 20, 2:30 p.m. Enjoy another performance by talented area musicians and mingle with them at a reception. Program to be announced. FREE.

December

Breakfast with Sint Niklaas, Saturday, December 3, 9 and 11 a.m. Join the kindly bishop as he makes his annual visit to Riversdale! He brings festive traditions like a Belgian-inspired breakfast and gifts for children. Children ages 3-10. Advance payment required by November 16; walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Resident*: $10 child; $7 adult | Non-Resident: $13 child; $9 adult
Riversdale by Candlelight, Friday, December 30, 6 p.m. Residents from three eras of Riversdale's history welcome guests to the candlelit museums for tours, refreshments, live music, and children's activities. Fee: $5/adult; FREE children 12 & under with a paid admission.
